Outcrop Descriptions

close
In order to record information and observations at an outcrop a good geologist always has a notebook, hand lens, compass, measuring tape or stick, grain size and color charts, maps, and an acid bottle with her or him at every rock outcrop they examine. The best way of recording sedimentological information in the field is to construct a graphic log and write detailed observations next to it, supplemented by field sketches and photographs. Graphic logs enable geologists to compile descriptive information in a concise format, and make it possible to display a large amount of information, such as mean grain size, composition, bed geometry, sedimentary structures, paleocurrents, fossils, colors, etc. using standard symbols that geologists everywhere can interpret.
