Virtual Field Studies:

Using data collected by Kelley (1989)
and Mehrtens (1979) during the course of their research,
the next section of the web module uses the background information
presented here to examine evolution in Trenton Falls, NY and Chesapeake
Bay, MD. These field studies offer you the ability to
examine both modes of evolutionary change, with data by Kelley (1989)
presenting gradual change data
from a genra of Tertiary mollusks (Astarte and Anadara ), and data by Mehrtens presenting a pattern of episodic change (punctuated equilibrium) as seen in 450 million year old
colonies of the bryozoa Prasopora. These "virtual"
field trips use photographs, outcrop descriptions, videos, drawings
and
data collection procedures that mimic the procedures used by Mehrtens and
Kelley as they collected data for their studies. Through the eyes
of a
geologist you will learn how to select field sites, how outcrops are
examined,
and the proper way to identify, collect, and examine fossil
data. After the process of collecting
data, the field study moves in to the laboratory where the processes
involved in the quantification of field data are discussed, along with
tutorials that demonstrates how this data can be used in the classroom as
authentic examples of evolution in
action.
